About Me:
Producer / Director of ParlorJazz! Inc. (and soon to be, Licensed Massage Therapist)
We saw the need to create an affordable, laid-back, intimate "listening room" for those professional Jazz musicians/vocalists (w/ a little R&B, spoken word, Blues and Funk thrown in for color!) who live in the Greater metropolitan NYC area and are true entertainers.

Once a month, we open our home to the general public and present some of the best artists in NYC. The $20 - $30 admission price include the entire evening of music (2 sets), open wine bar, beverages, a variety of snacks and desserts. The guests check their coats downstairs, then proceed to the upstairs double-parlor where the concerts take place, surrounded by African masks and local artists works that are highlighted on the walls. Weather permitting, our backyard garden with built-in waterfall, gazebo and fire-pit is available to all, before and between sets. Guests, old friends and musicians have the opportunity to socialize within this "private party" type atmosphere.
Musicians are increasingly forced to produce their own CD's and represent themselves to be recognized. We thought we'd come from the other direction and create our own venue where the musicians do not have to rely on having a "following" to get a gig nor are they subjected to every distraction that the typical venues (restaurant and bars) are famous for. The musicians are the total focus at ParlorJazz!
Our main objective is to introduce new audiences to those established professional musicians by providing "listening room" where the guests can 'feel" the music and respond. The musicians play, interact with the audience and respond in return. Between sets, there's a lot of networking, meeting new friends and just an overall great social vibe!

Grass-roots Jazz Lifeline: In-home "Live" Jazz House Parties

I have plenty of advise for anyone that would like to attempt these in-home live music parties. At ParlorJazz, our particular focus is Jazz, but does include: R&B, Blues, Funk, Neo-Soul, Nu-Jazz and Spoken Word with jazz music accompaniment as well. I'm even considering hosting a workshop about it. One of our Parlorjazz guests planted the seed. They told me that we should participate in the IAJE and be one of the workshops offered during their run. Well, unfortunately, as the continuing fate… Continue

Hi Janie,
Thank you for your wonderful comments. I absolutely DID approve your comments! Actually I am surprised that you haven't heard about "live, in-home" music concerts because over the past few years, different people have told me that this idea is a very "West coast" practice. Maybe they referred to times past or were passing on some mis-communication. I hope not. I'd love to know that this idea is spreading across the US. God forbid our talented musicians leave the fates of their careers in the hands of the music industry. It's a sad state of affairs.
I'm in my final semester of school (Massage therapy) and have many papers (and clinics) due, so I don't have time right now to write anything additional to what is here. If you like, please feel free to cut/paste/copy any part of my blog here to quote what I've said in your blog. HOWEVER this message gets out, I'd be very happy. The cause is just. The people are hungry and deserving to know who is out there that has the power to "move their soul!" You may certainly refer anyone to my email address who has any questions on starting up, what things they need to consider before they start...and after. I'd be more than happy to do that. Once I'm through with school and take my state licensing exam (Jan '09) and can work independently, I plan on diving full-throttle into taking ParlorJazz to the next level(s)!

On another note (literally!) I'd like to let you know of a couple of my other websites so that you may check out the bands/band leaders/vocalists and get a sense of who is in the NYC area. I'll GLADLY provide websites, music link, etc so that you and anyone you know may know if/when they may be coming your way. They are not all strick "Jazz" musicians. Some are, some are influenced by Jazz and/or incorporate it into their style. You will see. The links I've provided below are of musicians with whom I've become personal friends. I have provided the links below (feel free to pass their links around to all you know - that's how we can help:

It is a pleasure sharing with you. I hope that one day, when you plan a visit to NYC, you will look us up and be part of our ParlorJazz family!

All the best!

Jim and Dave...thanks for the add. I am enjoying your page and spent a lot of time on it last night. I even added a comment to your blog above...hope it was received for your approval.

ParlorJazz parties put into practice the components that I have long believed will revitalize and strengthen Jazz. If you have a piece summarizing this concept with some practical tips that you wouldn't mind sharing, I invite you to come to my blogspot page at chez-janie.blogspot.com and write a guest blog on the concept so we can spread this to L.A. Also, I think I will write something about this on LAJazz.com where I also blog.

Thanks again for the add and drop me an email here if you'd like to submit a guest piece for my blogspot.

All the best,
Janie

Hi Tamm E!
I was just saying that you knocked this out of the park with TGJN. We have needed something like this for so long and I am telling my friends about this.
so much more. This is real. The people here truly love jazz and we know people like that are not your average people.

I said that it is sort of like a myspace for jazz but it is actually
I have felt for a long time that straight-ahead jazz has been slipping away from us. I have hope now that there will be a resurgence (or shall I say an insurgency:-) to bring this baby back full force!
You just knocked it out of the park. Thanks again.

xoxo,
Janie
