Baltimore Jazz Giant - Mickey Fields

Here are two videos of a Baltimore Jazz Giant - saxophonist Mickey Fields, who performed with just about every major jazz performer who ever appeared in this area...(He could have been a "Star", but chose to remain in his home town - Baltimore...) In one of the videos, pay attention to his Masterful Technique, involving "slapping" the side-keys of the sax as he plays...then using his right leg to "nudge" the instrument and produce additional desired effect... The Amazing Mickey Fields !! (That… Continue

Drummer Hugh Walker

Drummer Hugh Walker is from the Baltimore/D.C. area. My new-found Jazz associates there (in the 70's) were often commenting on Hugh's propensity for "dropping bombs" - comparable to Elvin Jones. Not many are compared so favorably. If I remember correctly, there is definitely one - maybe two - uptempo tracks that demonstrate this Artistry of his. It's the kind of uptempo bomb-dropping that's guaranteed to make you Smile (It's okay - Miles Smiled)... I used to see Hugh Walker on a regular basis… Continue

Jazz Contemplations...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Betty Carter - I rate her above Ella, Sarah, AND Billie. Check out "The Betty Carter Album" from 1972. Larry Young - has been characterized as the "John Coltrane" of the organ. Check out "Unity"- album, with Coltrane's drummer Elvin Jones, also Woody Shaw, & Joe Henderson. McCoy Tyner - "Song of the New World"- album -- AWESOME ensemble playing! Woody Shaw - "Live At The Berliner… Continue

Hi DJ:
Thanks for the communication. It was very interesting to find out more about you. O'Donel did not recall who you were, but your explanation explains why. I am sure he would recognize you if he saw you.
Yes, Charles is an exceptional musician, as well as a Chess player and Magician. He was by to visit with Butch (OD) not long ago. I haven't seen him for a while, but have spoken with him via telephone.
It was admirable in reference to your going from acid rock to smooth jazz..that's evident that change is possible.
Again, thank you for the communication, and please stay in touch.
Peace & Blessings,
Estella

Hello DJ:
Thank you for the positive comments, inclusively of your prayers and well-wishes. Prayer has really worked for O'Donel. He has made miraculous progress, thanks to everyone. Charles Covington visited with him not too long ago, it was a great visit between the two.
I just talked with OD (Butch) on the phone, and he doesn't recall who you are. Do you have a radio show?
Please keep in touch with us, and again, thank you for the invitation to be a friend, and your continuous prayers. My prayer is for you to continue to fully recover from your stroke, am sorry to have heard the sad news.
Peace & Blessings
Estella

Tamm E,

This is a wonderful, and important site, and my friends who have joined seem to agree. Thank you for what must be a ton of work on your end.

Warm regards,

Ron

Hi Tamm E!
I was just saying that you knocked this out of the park with TGJN. We have needed something like this for so long and I am telling my friends about this.
so much more. This is real. The people here truly love jazz and we know people like that are not your average people.

I said that it is sort of like a myspace for jazz but it is actually
I have felt for a long time that straight-ahead jazz has been slipping away from us. I have hope now that there will be a resurgence (or shall I say an insurgency:-) to bring this baby back full force!
You just knocked it out of the park. Thanks again.

xoxo,
Janie
